Project ID: 190801

Project Name: Automated image analysis for identifying biofouling risk on vessels

CEBRA Project Leader: Nathaniel Bloomfield and Andrew Robinson

DAWE Project Sponsor: Peter Stoutjesdijk, Director Marine and Aquatic Biosecurity, Biosecurity Animal Division

DAWE Project Leader: Jason Garwood, Marine Biosecurity Unit, Bartholomew Woodham, Marine Biosecurity Unit, Biosecurity Animal Division

Collaborators:

  • Cian Foster-Thorp, DAWE
  • Eugene Georgiades, MPI
  • Dan Kluza, MPI
  • Chris Scianni, CSLC
  • Justin McDonald, WA DPIRD
  • David Abdo, WA DPIRD

This project will utilise modern image analysis techniques to analyse images taken as part of in-water vessel inspections for biofouling. Data already collected by DAWE and MPI and potentially other sources will be used to develop a prototype algorithm or framework for automated assessment of the biofouling condition of vessels. The objective of this framework or algorithmic approach will be to significantly decrease the time required to assess biofouling risk on vessels and reduce variability in assessment outcomes.
